Agios Ioannis Beach Shallow Water

Are you looking for the perfect beach for the whole family during your holiday in Halkidiki? Just a few minutes' drive south of Nikiti, you’ll find Agios Ioannis Beach. With its turquoise, shallow waters and soft sand, it’s easy to see why this particular bay is a top pick for parents with young children.

Here is everything you need to know for a stress-free and wonderful day at the beach with the kids.

Why Agios Ioannis is Perfect for Families

When traveling with children, logistics and safety are everything. Agios Ioannis ticks almost every box on the wishlist:

  • Shallow and Calm Waters: The bay is well-protected from winds, meaning there are rarely any large waves here. The water is crystal clear, and the seabed consists of soft sand. Children can splash around and build sandcastles by the shoreline for hours.

  • Plenty of Space: The beach is nearly a kilometer long and quite wide. Even during the peak season in July and August, it rarely feels crowded, giving children plenty of room to run around without disturbing the neighbors.

  • Easy Access: Unlike some other hidden gems in Sithonia, there are no steep hills or long stairs here. You basically walk straight from your car onto the sand—a lifesaver when you're carrying inflatable rings, cooler bags, and tired toddlers.

Beach Clubs or "DIY"?

The beach is divided into two different experiences, allowing you to choose what suits your family best for the day.

The Organized Section: On the left side (closest to the main road) lies the luxury Ammoa hotel and a few comfortable beach clubs. Here, you can rent plush sunbeds, have food and drinks served to you, and enjoy access to showers and restrooms. It comes with a price tag, but it’s incredibly convenient if you want maximum comfort.

The Free Section: The rest of the beach is completely open and free of charge. Here, you can spread out your own towels and set up your own umbrella. Important note: There is almost no natural shade from trees at Agios Ioannis, so bringing your own UV tent or parasol is an absolute must if you choose the free section.

Parking and How to Get Here

Agios Ioannis is located about 4 kilometers south of Nikiti, right along the main road toward Neos Marmaras. You can’t miss the glowing turquoise bay from the road.

For those of us traveling with families, parking is often the biggest concern, but here it’s incredibly simple. There are large, free gravel parking areas directly behind the beach. If you arrive reasonably early in the morning, you can park your car just 20 meters from the water’s edge.

Three Quick Tips for Your Beach Day

  1. Check the Seabed: While most of it is soft sand, there are some natural flat rock plates right at the water’s edge in certain spots. They aren't dangerous and are clearly visible in the clear water, but it’s good to keep an eye on them when the little ones are running in.

  2. Bring Snacks: If you aren't staying at a beach club, make sure to stop by a supermarket in Nikiti to stock up on fruit, crackers, and cold drinks before you head out.

  3. Stay for the Sunset: The beach faces southwest, giving you sun almost all day and a fantastic, soft evening light.
